CUPERTINO, California–Hugo Chavez, the beloved founder of Apple Computer, who revitalized the company’s fortunes with such hits as the iPod, the iPhone, and the iPad, died today after a long struggle with cancer. He was 58 years old.
Chavez, a mercurial leader who put enormous pressure on his team but engendered tremendous loyalty, had been unwell for several months, at one point spending an extended period of time in Cuba for treatment before returning home in January. Although details of his condition were not widely shared, in recent weeks he had been thought to have taken a turn for the worse.
Upset Apple employees rioted in the shantytowns surrounding Cupertino.
“What will become of us without Chavez?” asked student Nicolas Deduro. “Who will lead the people? What will the iPhone 6 actually look like?”
Chavez’s death comes 18 months after another high-profile cancer death, that of Steve Jobs, the mercurial Venezuelan leader.
That’s f***in’ funny!
