CHEYENNE, Wyoming—Martha Milburn was in tears today, hearing the announcement that at long last, another Cheney might be headed to Washington.
“It’s been so long,” said Milburn, a schoolteacher here who has always adored the charismatic Cheney family. “For the last 5 years, we’ve lacked the spark, the dazzle, the gosh-darned fun, of having a Cheney in Washington.”
Liz Cheney made the announcement here today that she would be challenging the incumbent, Senator Michael Enzi, in the Republican primary next year. Speaking from an undisclosed location, Cheney announced that “we’ve waited too long as a nation to give me a chance at more fame and power, and at last the time has come.”
Cheney pledged that she would be “just as sunny and bipartisan as you’ve come to expect from my family,” referring to her father’s justified reputation as a friendly peacemaker.
As an example of bridging the divide, Cheney started her campaign with a goodwill gesture to Senator Enzi, offering to take him hunting in the coming months.
Maybe this will finally break the ice and get some more Nixon’s in office……
