COLUMBIA, South Carolina–on the way home from his trip to Mexico, Pope Francis reflected on his recent feud with Donald Trump and its possible implications for today’s South Carolina primary.
“Look, I think it could hurt us with some segments of the electorate, no doubt,” said Francis. “But I think my appeal is more to the mainstream Republican, and hopefully they see through Donald’s criticisms.”
The flame war with Trump erupted after Francis called on all people to “build bridges, not walls,” and also poked fun at Trump’s business record and inability to cure the sick.
Trump, in the meantime, bragged that he would finish with “at least five times the votes the Pope gets.”
